Hotel shops have been hit and miss (think teddies, branded polo shirts and boxes of fudge), but a clutch of new shops are showing how chic and even useful the right one in the right location can be.
Paul Smith has long been a fan of the Art Deco interiors at Claridge's (claridges.co.uk) - he has hosted his fashion shows there many times - and now he has opened a boutique at the hotel. The new store stocks Smith's bags, jewellery and accessories as well as his country-inspired autumn ready-to-wear collection.
London's other famed Deco hotel, The Savoy (the-savoy.com) has added a Boodles boutique, designed by Eva Jiricna, as part of its refurbishment.
In more exotic climes, the Clickini Cabana in the Maradiva resort in Mauritius (maradiva.com) pops up during January, selling cool beach brands, from Tomas Maier bags and bikinis to Thierry Colson cover-ups and Dianora Salviati's cashmere scarves and wraps.
There will even be cocktails inspired by the collections, and Clickini's founder Jonathan McKeever will be on hand to give styling advice. So you won't have to saunter far from your lounger to pick up a whole new look.
