The fashionable London hotel One Aldwych has just done an unfashionable thing: opened a guest lounge. It's a private space for people staying at the hotel. Here's what it's not: a business centre, an executive floor, a bar, a lobby or a meeting facility. It turned out that guests wanted somewhere they could sit quietly and read without being pestered to buy something every few minutes.
It's a very cool space, with contemporary art and jaw-dropping art books chosen by Covent Garden neighbour Sir Paul Smith — as opposed to the dog-eared Monopoly sets and faded doilies we used to associate with the genre. And it set us thinking: where else can you find a good old-fashioned or newfangled guest lounge?
