A boutique hotel in the heart of Manhattan, The Distrikt opened its doors just over a year ago to much hype. Located on West 40th Street between 8th and 9th, it's slap bang in the middle of the tourist district. Times Square, the New York Times building, the department stores, fashionable boutiques and all the Broadway shows are moments away. In terms of accommodation elsewhere in this area, very little exists on this smaller scale, so the Distrikt is an instant refreshing change. Plus, it's fashionable and hip, cool and comfortable with only 155 rooms (5 rooms to each floor).

The real USP of hotel is that it offers 5-star quality at 3-star prices, which is always a massive bonus in a city like New York. The design is slick, stylish but simple, and not over done.  Designed by the local Otte Architecture, they couldn't have created a more New York hotel. The design focuses on the 10 districts of New York, from Harlem to midtown, with 31 collages of each area. Artist Chris Rubino translated more than 10,000 photos of each neighbourhood and created a series of neighbourhood collages. These start in the lobby where an 11-foot green collage represents Central Park, and then adorn the walls as you ascend the 31 floors of the hotel.

The service is impeccable (unbeatable, in fact) and there's great attention to the detail. There are three Apple mac computers for guests, plus free wi-fi all over the hotel. The beds are large and comfy, and cosying up in a Frette bathrobe and enjoying the papers (delivered, of course) is the perfect start to the day. The breakfast room is slick with long wooden benches and tables, and a choice of continental or a cooked breakfast. At night, it doubles up as a bistro offering New York-inspired food and local beers.

New York may be exhausting, but the Distrikt is a comfortable, luxurious oasis and perfect place to rest your head, without costing a fortune. The opening hype was certainly justified. It fills a void in the NY hotel market: cool, stylish yet affordable, and in the heart of Manhatten. I just hope the prices — and the place — don't become too trendy.
