DAY ONE
Biggest, tallest and best are words you'll hear a lot in Dubai. Describing its gigantic shopping malls, towering buildings and haute cuisine, this once-sleepy expanse of desert now swims in superlatives. It's the place to shop until you drop, eat until you pop and dance until the sun rises.

A taxi is the only way to get around: for one thing the skyscraper-tall Jimmy Choos favoured by the city's fashion pack aren't made for walking and petrol is cheap in oil-rich Dubai. Ease yourself into the city's lavish lifestyle with a weekend brunch (weekends are Friday to Saturday). For a river view accompanied by bottomless glasses of wine and beautifully crafted cuisine,
try Legends Restaurant at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club (dubaigolf.com). Nab the 'floating table' on the sun-soaked terrace for added glamour.

Although you could feasibly spend all your time exploring Dubai's 68 shopping malls, it's worth dedicating some time to a different kind of exploration: dune bashing. Belt up for an afternoon with Arabian Adventures (arabian-adventures.com) and prepare to topsy-turvy over sand dunes in a 4x4. You will be navigated across the desert before dinner at a Bedouin-style camp with grilled meat and salads, henna painting and hookah pipes.
